Job Description

LHH Recruitment Solutions is partnering with a manufacturing company in Portland, OR on a Senior Design and Automation Engineer job. You have experience designing manufacturing equipment that produces high volume industrial consumer goods. You also effectively assess existing manufacturing equipment and provide improved reliability, productivity, and quality in their capabilities. Responsibilities:

  • Lead the end-to-end development of complex automated systems—from concept through to production—ensuring designs meet manufacturing and business requirements.
  • Create detailed parametric 3D models, conduct FEA, apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5), and perform tolerance analysis to produce drawings, BOMs, and test plans.
  • Specify and integrate essential machine components, including the selection of sensors, motor and actuator sizing, and the design of pneumatic systems.
  • Guide and support technical activities with suppliers and internal teams, applying Lean and Six Sigma principles to enhance equipment design and quality systems.
  • Initiate and lead continuous improvement projects, identify areas for process optimization, and mentor others in best practices.
  • Maintain clear, timely communication and documentation, ensuring updates are shared effectively with team members and external partners.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve technical challenges, present solutions, and contribute to project planning and scheduling.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in similar mechanical engineering functions in high volume production environments
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering preferred
  • Experience, aptitude, and/or strong interest in mentoring and leading junior team members

Skills:

  • Strong CAD software skills, ideally in SolidWorks
  • Proficiency with PLC-based automation controls systems

About the role:

  • Full Time, Direct Hire
  • Mon – Fri; 8a-5p, with flexibility in hours
  • Hybrid role – 3-4 days working on site
  • Comp / Benefits – 100-130K DOE; employer/employee supported medical, dental and vision plans, paid time off, 401k with company match
