Job Summary

We seek a highly analytical, strategic, and people-focused Controller to lead our accounting and finance operations in Portland, OR. This critical leadership role supports a dynamic commercial construction and service-based business, overseeing the integrity of our financial systems, driving process improvements, and guiding a high-performing accounting team. The ideal candidate is a problem solver with deep industry experience, fluency in WIP and GAAP accounting, and a passion for developing others and aligning finance with operational success.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead all accounting operations including general ledger, WIP schedules, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and audit preparation.
  • Provide strategic financial insights to leadership, supporting business decisions through KPI analysis and special reporting.
  • Champion data-driven decision-making and a continuous improvement culture across the finance function.

Accounting Operations

  • Oversee timely and accurate monthly closes, driving a faster, more efficient close cycle.
  • Ensure full GAAP compliance and strong WIP accounting practices across all projects.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting, including disbursements, collections, and working capital optimization.

Controls & Compliance

  • Establish, review, and enforce internal controls and financial procedures that ensure accuracy and reduce risk.
  • Ensure payroll compliance, with deep knowledge of prevailing wage requirements.
  • Support audits and regulatory reporting with precision and responsiveness.

Technology & Systems

  • Leverage financial systems—NetSuite experience strongly preferred—as well as field service and construction management software to streamline reporting and workflows.
  • Lead initiatives to improve integration and utilization of accounting and operational systems.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Mentor and develop accounting staff, building a resilient, skilled, and motivated team.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with project managers, executives, and field leaders to align financial practices with operational goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in commercial construction or service-based industries.
  • Mastery of WIP accounting, GAAP, budgeting, and cash flow management.
  • Proficient in financial systems; experience with NetSuite and construction software.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Strong understanding of payroll compliance and prevailing wage rules in OR & WA.
